After a couple of years of touring their critically acclaimed second album ‘Post Era’, the three founding members of LYLO have been indulging in a writing hiatus. The outcome is their long-awaited new album ’Thoughts Of Never’, an honest body of work that deals with emotional communication, melancholy in metropolis and the willingness to (re)connect - a theme that directly affected the group through the writing process, when they were living apart between Glasgow and Berlin. The themes are explored through their wonky pop soundscape, with nods to R&B and Soul, intertwined with ambient pads, giving more space and attention to the sublime vocals of Mitch Flynn.
The first offering from the new album is ‘Hush’ - a downbeat pop-club track with Balearic tendencies and a nod to Neo soul. “The song highlights the want or struggle to (re)connect with others in the overwhelming day to day and the anxiety that expectation can bring”. Demonstrated with a feature vocal from Esmé Dee Hand-Halford of The Orielles, portraying ‘a voice’.
The video for the ‘Hush’ was made in collaboration with BAFTA nominee’s, director Daniel Cook, Fergus Cook and producer, Marcy Paterson. It touches on the anxious voice you chase and escape through the mundane day to day. Inspired by the Warriors film and the style of director Takeishi Kitano, the video has an early Yorgos Lanthimos aesthetic.
'Thoughts Of Never’ was engineered and co-produced with Joel Patchett (Billy Ocean, King Krule) between Chime Studios in Glasgow, their Glasgow tenement and Berlin apartment. With the imposed lockdown, LYLO were separated in different countries, this provided the three core members Justin Allan, Jack Seaton and Mitch Flynn group to reflect and home in on their true sound.
On ‘Thoughts Of Never’ LYLO have harnessed and cherished a vulnerability in their writing and performance and have produced a more collaborative based album which highlights the strive for connection itself. The album includes several features and collaborations from artist friends, with the likes of Cassandra Jenkins (LYLO were Cassandra’s backing band on her last UK/EU album tour), Gerard Black (Babe), Esmé Dee Hand-Halford (The Orielles) and spoken word poet alore,, all making an appearance on the captivating new record.
